I expect everyone knows the different types of scans but just in case......till a few years ago I hadn't heard about PET scan and their advantages. A PET scan takes considerably longer and a search on goggle will give full details but the main advantage is the information that it gives over a CT or MRI scan. A PET scan can show if damage is actually cancer cells rather than scar tissue or radiotherapy damage for instance. This means that often a surgical biopsy is unnecessary and obviously this is better for the patient. I came across PET scans when reading about a woman who sued her health authority. When Bob had a surgical biopsy to find out if his deep lymph glands were involved it cost £2,600 plus discomfort for him. A PET scan would have given this info and cost £600 and 30 mins lying still! Just a thought! Daisey.
