Hi all
My name is Ray. In Feb 08, my dad was diagnosed with stage 3B squamous cell NSCLC, T3N3M0.
He has had radiotherapy but cannot have chemo as he has diabetes and a heart condition. We are going for a checkup with the oncologist shortly (May 9th) and we will see how effective the radiotherapy and his new diet have helped. I would like him to be on Tarceva but the dreadful oncologist we have got angry when my mum asked about it in general at the last appointment. I get the feeling that this terrible person will not be backing any application to the PCT for funding. However, I believe that he will possibly refuse to administer care if we opt to obtain it privately. We will be getting to the stage where we have to press the question and I have to be prepared for the doctor to tell us to take a hike. However, I am not going down without a fight - is there anything we can say if the doctor refuses to offer ongoing care even after we pay for Tarceva oursleves?
I have read this wonderful website and must congratulate all who contribute. Deanne and Jimmy - thank you for your efforts in fighting for us all and I hope that you are doing well, Jimmy!

Hi Ray, I have read through your post and I cannot believe what I am reading! How dare the oncologist get angry with your mum for trying to do the best by your Dad! what if it where him with this bloody disease or his loved one! You mum and dad are in charge not him! If you have read the front of this site you will have seen that we were refused further treatment from Jimmy's 1st oncologist basically because he did not like the publicity I was creating, The hospital cannot refuse treatment they would have to find you another oncologist 1st. Jimmy's 1st one actually did us a favor because the oncologist he is under now is fantastic a breath of fresh air. The oncologist is supposed to do whats best for the patient NOT WHAT IS BEST FOR THE HOSPITAL BUDGET! Ray your parents need someone on their side not some jumped up oncologist who thinks he is God. Sorry to be so blunt but it just makes me so mad that your parents are being treat this way. I am so sorry that your parents are receiving such treatment and negativity from someone who is being paid to help them. If their is anything at all I can do to help or advise just ask. If you would rather speak on the phone let me know and I will send you my number.
Take care Deanne x

How dare they treat someone who is sick in this way, what on earth are they paid for? What utter arrogance, hope that you get the best possible treatment available without the humiliation of having to fight for what you deserve. wishing you all well wendy

Hi Ray
welcome to the site, It is a bloody shambles the NHS.!! Why do we have to keep on fighting for these life saving drugs. simple answer it is a money saving business now human feelings have long been left behind. I can only share the sentiments of the others and say how dare they treat your dad like they have, as deanne has already mentioned question everything they say they like to play god, some oncologists actually do care about their patients and some clearly are simply there for their employers. I hope everything works out for you
