Hi All Dawn, Sharon and others shared with me their thoughts on M.Nurses and what they did, so after reading those I contacted my GP and asked if we could see one. Dave was diagnosed as terminal in Nov last year but no one offered this service to us.I had read about them but thought they would only become involved at the last moment for terminal care. Anyway we saw one finally last week and she explained what she could do for us, her role and stayed for a couple of hours getting to know Dave and me. What a great couple of hours, learnt more in that time about what's available than in last 18 months!! She explained about the disability benefits that we didn't know about and set all that in motion for us, seems we have missed out on lots of money!!! arranged some physio for Dave ( after removal of his right lung his right side now droops) also explained some complementary therapies that were available. Also good to know there is someone you can call on for questions etc... when Docs aren't so readily available. So thanks for pointing me in their direction .

Hi Ros, Just been reading through your post about McMillan nurse. I am pleased that you found her useful. I cannot believe that you were not told about different benefits. Jimmy's cancer specialist nurse sorted all that when he was diagnosed and the benefits were back dated to the date of Jimmy's diagnosis so they should back date.

No, we have never seen a cancer specialist nurse just the Consultants. You have no idea about any of this side of treatment and what you are entitled to, do you? I always thought that as I was working we weren't entitled to anything!! Foolish me! Still maybe we can get some of them backdated.

Ros,
I was told that we could only get the benefits from Kent was diagnosed, fair enough, we were told this by the Cancer Care specialist nurses at papworth and by our GP, who was really switched on, sadly he has left the Practice (two weeks ago). We didn't realise we are entitled to the blue badge or the mobility allowance until the DWP rang us.
Ros, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us, I am sure we have a collective knowledge base you can tap into.

Hiya Ros, Jimmy also gets free car tax and disability tax disc for his car. We did not think we would be entitled to anything becasue he is working but you are.

Thanks both
We have the forms for Blue badge and DLA and nurse is getting the DS1500 report for us we didn't think we would qualify for blue badge but if Jimmy got it, then maybe we will, does this mean free car tax as well??

Kent get free car tax and a blue badge. Addenbrookes still charge the blue badge holders for parking.
Haven't seen the Macmillan Nurse since the initial contact. one phone call and that has been it. i wonder if they think kent has passed on.. yesterday was the six month marker.

Hiya Ros, appalling that Addenbrookes still charge the blue badge holders for parking. How can they do that??? It amazes me how they are allowed to just make their own rules with everything!!! How long will patients be discriminated against! One patients rights should apply to all God how many times have I said that! it's amazing Phillipa how fast the months fly out...he is doing so well.
Take care Deanne x

I write in praise of McMillan nurses, after first being sceptical as to what they could offer I discovered very quickly they offered quite a lot and are still willing to offer me support 2 months down the line since Dave's death. They called each week, came if we needed them, stayed away when we didn't so for me they were great. So many places still charge blue badge holders, I was amazed but our local hospital did give free parking, about the only good thing they did do!!!! Ros
